DAKAR – GORÉE ISLAND – PINK LAKE – SAINT-LOUIS

After breakfast, board a ferry to Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This hauntingly beautiful island, once a hub of the transatlantic slave trade, reveals its history through pastel-colored colonial houses, baobab-shaded squares, and cobbled alleys. The House of Slaves and its “Door of No Return” offer a poignant tribute to its past. Enjoy a seafood lunch by the ocean before returning to Dakar.

In the afternoon, head to Pink Lake (Lake Retba), where high salinity and sunlight transform the waters into shades of pink and mauve. A 4×4 ride through the surrounding dunes and salt flats immerses you in this surreal landscape. Then, we drive to Saint-Louis, a former French colonial capital brimming with Creole charm. Savor local flavors for dinner and overnight in a heritage hotel.

SAINT-LOUIS – DIAMA DAM – ROSSO – RKIZ

After breakfast by the Senegal River, we head to the Diama Dam, a key hydraulic structure at the border between Senegal and Mauritania. After customs formalities, we stop in Rosso to explore its bustling covered market, a sensory overload of spices, handwoven fabrics, and Mauritanian crafts—perfect for unique souvenirs.

Enjoy a traditional lunch (think grilled fish or slow-cooked lamb) before hitting the desert tracks toward Rkiz. Upon arrival at Lake Rkiz, you’ll be mesmerized by this 150 km² oasis, where fishermen, cattle herders, and farmers coexist in harmony. The lake, crucial for irrigation, offers serene landscapes and golden sunsets.

The day culminates with a magical starlit bivouac (or cozy nomadic tent) by the lakeshore. Feast on a campfire dinner, listen to Mauritanian tales, and fall asleep to the whispers of the wilderness.

RKIZ – BOUTILIMIT – INTO THE SAHARA

After breakfast by the lake, the real desert adventure begins: we set off for Boutilimit, where the Sahara swallows all roads. No pavement here—your 4×4 will carve a path through ochre sands, rocky plains, and wind-shaped dunes. A picnic stop under a lone acacia tree adds wild charm to this epic journey.

Upon reaching Boutilimit, a historical gem, you’ll feel the weight of its legacy:

  • Explore the library of Cheikh Sidiya, home to centuries-old manuscripts inked in gold and indigo.

  • Discover the legacy of Mokhtar Ould Daddah, Mauritania’s founding father.

As the sun dips, settle into your nomadic camp amid the dunes. Feast on fire-grilled dishes, sip mint tea under a star-blanketed sky, and let the desert’s infinite silence lull you to sleep.

NOUAKCHOTT – DESERT MEETS CITY

Trade the dunes for the vibrant pulse of Nouakchott, a capital where desert dust blends with urban energy. En route, witness the striking shift from nomadic tents to the city’s sprawling suburbs.

Panoramic tour of its iconic districts:

  • Teyarett & Le Ksar: The historic heart, with sandy alleys and low-rise buildings.

  • Tevragh Zeina & Sebkha: Hubs of modern Mauritanian life.

  • El Mina: The fishing port, alive with salty breezes and bustling docks.

The skyline is punctuated by the twin minarets of the Saudi and Moroccan mosques, standing sentry over this horizontal city.

Cultural deep-dive at the National Museum: medieval manuscripts, Tuareg jewelry, and caravan maps unveil Mauritania’s layered past. Then, explore the artisan market—spice sacks, indigo fabrics, and silver nomad jewelry await. Don’t miss the women-run upper floor, a testament to local commerce.

Highlight: Sunset at the fishing port, where blue-painted pirogues unload their catch. Feast on grilled sea bass or spicy fish stew before retiring to your hotel.

NOUAKCHOTT – NIMJAT – MEDERDRA – NOMADS & HOLY SITES

After breakfast, we set off by 4×4 to Nimjat, a sacred pilgrimage site for the revered Cheikh Saadbou. The white mausoleums and whispered prayers create an aura of timeless devotion. A picnic break by a shaded well, under a gnarled acacia tree, lets you soak in the serenity.

In the afternoon, we drive deeper into the dunes to Mederdra, a remote village where Berber Moors uphold nomadic traditions. Share mint tea in a camel-hair tent, learn about desert survival, and witness a way of life unchanged for centuries.

As the sun sets, enjoy a nomadic feast (slow-roasted lamb, millet couscous) under the stars. Spend the night in a Mauritanian tent camp, lulled by the whispers of the Sahara.
