Nouakchott – Akjoujt – Erg Amatlich – Azoiga Oasis

An adventure into the heart of Mauritania’s breathtaking landscapes

Our journey begins in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, as we head toward Akjoujt, a town renowned for its mining heritage and desert landscapes. After a brief exploration, we take the trail leading to the Amatlich dune massif, a natural site of striking beauty. These majestic dunes, among the tallest in the region, offer a breathtaking panorama and a complete immersion into the vastness of the desert.

Along the way, we make a stop at the Graritte Livrasse Oasis, a peaceful haven nestled amidst the sands. We then continue toward the great dune of Erg Amatlich, known as Azoiga. This imposing dune, with its perfect wind-sculpted curves, is an iconic spot for lovers of desert landscapes and photography.

The day concludes with an authentic bivouac, either under the stars in a sky filled with constellations or in a traditional nomadic tent. This moment of tranquility, accompanied by mint tea and the whispers of the desert, offers an unforgettable experience, blending adventure and serenity.

This itinerary is an invitation to explore the natural wonders of Mauritania, from majestic dunes and preserved oases to magical nights under the stars. It’s the perfect experience for those seeking to escape and reconnect with nature in an exceptional setting.

The Foum Tizigui Pass – El Meddah Oasis

Our journey begins early as we head to Foum Tizigui, a strategic passage located in the heart of the Amatlich dune belt. This site, famous for its role in the history of the Paris-Dakar Rally, stretches over nearly 400 km, offering a spectacular landscape and a complete immersion into the vastness of the Mauritanian desert. The dunes, sculpted by the winds, create a breathtaking natural setting, perfect for an extraordinary experience.

We continue our route to the El Meddah Oasis, the largest palm grove in Mauritania. This oasis, a true gem amidst the sands, embodies the natural wealth and resilience of the region. The date palms, planted along the dune belts, form a striking contrast between the desert’s aridity and the lush greenery of the oasis. This site also marks the beginning of the famous Amatlich dune belt, a landscape that will leave you in awe.

The day concludes with an authentic bivouac under a nomadic tent, where you can enjoy traditional mint tea, a symbol of Mauritanian hospitality. This moment of relaxation, under a starry sky, offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature and enjoy a culturally enriching experience.

Tifoujar – Terjit – The N’Tourvine Pass – Mheirth Oasis

The summit of the Tifoujar Pass offers a breathtaking view. A 200-meter drop plunges directly into the El-Abiod riverbed, nestled at the bottom of the valley, while the imposing dunes rise up to engulf this now entirely sand-covered pass.

Our journey then takes us to Terjit, home to a stunning thermal oasis with natural pools where our guests can bathe and rejuvenate.

After crossing the N’Tourvine Pass, the landscapes that unfold are of rare beauty. The trail continues across the plateau, guiding us toward the Mheirth Oasis.

Finally, the evening concludes with a bivouac under the stars or, for an authentic experience, in a nomadic tent, offering an atmosphere of absolute serenity.

The day concludes with a comfortable stay at a guesthouse, where our guests can relax after this day filled with remarkable discoveries.

Chinguetti

We then set off toward Chinguetti, the seventh holy city of Islam, founded in the 11th century. Chinguetti is renowned for its dry-stone houses and its iconic mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once there, we explore the old town, the local museum, and the historic library, which houses ancient manuscripts of immense cultural and religious value.

The day concludes with a stay at a guesthouse, where comfort and warmth await our guests.

Amogjar Canyon – Atar – Azougui – Yaghraf

We continue our journey to the Amogjar Canyon, an impressive site where we have the opportunity to admire prehistoric rock paintings and discover remnants of the famous film Fort Saganne, among other curiosities.

Next, we head to Atar, the current capital of the Adrar region, home to the largest and most vibrant market in the area. This colorful market is brimming with exotic goods, showcasing the bustling Saharan trade.
